AM I STILL A BLACK WOMAN? 23andme

THOUGHT PROVOKING THURSDAY! (That’s my new title and I’m sticking to it!)

WOULD YOUR IDENTITY CHANGE IF YOU FOUND OUT YOU WERE OF A DIFFERENT ETHNIC BACKGROUND? Hmmmm…

So I put a status up this morning on Facebook, but thought I’d do a video on it and put it out to Youtube as well. I’m considering doing the 23andme DNA testing. And as ya’ll know, I’m not the poster child of the image of a Black woman…or so some would say…but what is black anyway? Would your identity change? Would you want to explore the other ethnic parts of you? Or would you just stuff the test under your bed and forget about it? Comment down below, i’d love to hear. I’m struggling with this one!

Regardless, I’m still celebrating Black History month!

  1. Thanks for the video! I have tested several companies and the most complete in ancestry to me is 24Genetics https://24genetics.co.uk/ with more than 400 regions. You could try that one!

Real Talk If you discovered a large part of your ancestry is not from your African (black) ancestors I don't think there's anything wrong with still identifying as a black woman (or mixed-race) and also having some pride in the rest of your heritage. The one-drop rule is man-made not God-made and really applies only in the US. No matter what others say about the past, we are all fearfully and wonderfully made by God and not every "non-African" dna has anything to do with non-consensual relations. Don't let others who don't care about you on a personal level define who you are.

  4. ?Go for it sweet heart ??

That one drop rule never stops being in effect!

I would feel devastated if I found out I was less Black than I think I am. However I would still continue to identify as Black no matter what.

  7. I dont care much anymore about my heritage. Im tired of my family giving me different stories of my various backgrounds. It gets old after a while and Im sick of it. My skin is brown, so I assume black.

  8. How are you living a lie if that is how you self identify? So you find out you are 70% white now you no longer consider yourself black? I have seen people who are whiter than you claim their blackness so what are talking about!?

Why didn't you just reveal tge results of your test instead of doing this short vid?

  9. I was curious about the test myself. I would like to know more about my DNA but I’m not 100% sure what the companies are doing with my DNA info………

  10. Nope…..I'm mixed with Negro, American Indian, German, Czechoslovakian and what else ever they can find. I am loving it and proud of by Black heritage! I'm okay with being a Sista and wouldn't have it any other way!!!
